Among the most spectacular hikes around Courmayeur, the trail to the Walter Bonatti Refuge is one of the most popular for those who want to admire up close the glaciers and towering peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. Located at around 2,025 metres above sea level in Val Ferret, the refuge is considered one of the most breathtaking panoramic viewpoints in the Alps.
The easiest route starts from Lavachey or Planpincieux, along the road of Val Ferret, and follows a trail that gradually climbs the valley side through larch forests and panoramic clearings. Along the way, hikers enjoy stunning views of the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent du Géant and the glaciers of Mont Blanc, making the hike a truly unforgettable alpine experience.
The trail is well marked and suitable for hikers with a basic level of fitness. In about 1–2 hours of walking, you reach the refuge, which is also a refreshment point and an important stop along famous alpine routes such as the Tour du Mont Blanc.
Once at the top, the panoramic terrace of the refuge offers an extraordinary view over the glaciers and peaks of Val Ferret, the perfect place for a relaxing break surrounded by nature.
